This week has seen the majority of the first team squad at Chelsea return to kick off pre-season training.

Only those who represented their nations deep into international tournaments have not joined up with the side under new manager Enzo Maresca.

This has seen a welcome return for the likes of Wesley Fofana and Romeo Lavia, who both missed nearly all of last season due to individual injuries.

Fitness woes were ultimately the downfall of the Blues last season, with plenty of players forced to watch from the sidelines for far too long.

One of those was actually club captain Reece James. He will already be missing the first few games of next season due to a red card picked up in his last Premier League appearance.

It was injuries that kept him off the pitch for the majority of the last campaign though, and this is certainly something he will be looking to address this season.

In a video on the club’s official Twitter, the England international can be seen seemingly walking off the training pitch in deep conversation with Maresca, both with their arm around each other.

While the contents of the chat remain unknown, it looks as if they exchange a lot of information in that time.

James needs big season

James will be hoping to really kick on this season after no doubt stagnating due to injuries over the past few campaigns.

He still has more than enough quality to be an absolute nightmare for wingers. Manchester City’s Jeremy Doku has already named him his most difficult opponent in the Premier League, describing him as ‘quality’.

The Englishman will need to be on his game too. He has competition for his place in the first team from Malo Gusto now, who seems to have returned to pre-season training in great physical shape.
