Today was the first chance for Chelsea supporters to get a look at their side in Premier League action under the new manager.

Maresca will have been impressed by certain players’ performances. Chelsea supporters loved the display of Romeo Lavia before he was brought off in the second half.

It was clear that starting attacks all the way from the goalkeeper were going to be key for the Blues under their new boss, and there were plenty of examples of this in the first half.

Maresca annoyed at Chelsea supporters’ frustration

The supporters inside Stamford Bridge were getting frustrated at this style of play, making their feelings known when the game stopped for the Chelsea players to assess their options.

This seemed to frustrate Maresca. Sky Sports showed after the game that he turned to supporters to question why there was rumbles of discontent despite the Blues being under no real pressure at the back.

The club will feel as if they have defenders who can excel in this setup. Both Wesley Fofana and Levi Colwill looked comfortable with the ball at their feet today.

Maresca system will take time

Chelsea supporters will have no choice but to get to grips with the style of football the Italian is looking to bring to the club, and the players will no doubt appreciate less discontent from their own fans.

The irony is some of their best chances of the game came from when they kept their patience and built up from the back.

The hope will be that this system will see more rewards come its way when they face slightly weaker opposition than the defending champions.
