ESPN pundit claims Chelsea still wouldn’t win the PL even with 20-goal striker in their squad

Don Hutchinson has suggested that Chelsea would struggle to challenge for the Premier League title even if they had kept hold of Tammy Abraham.

Hutchinson made his claim on ESPN, after being asked about whether the Blues could’ve attacked Manchester City’s crown better with Abraham on board.

The young striker no longer saw a future at Stamford Bridge, after he was shunted to the sides by Thomas Tuchel.

He moved to Roma last summer to join forces with Jose Mourinho, another cut from the Chelsea family.

All tip top for Tammy

Whilst Mourinho’s tenure in Roma has been up and down, the centre-forward continues to move towards dizzying heights.

On Saturday, Abraham scored his 20th goal for the season across all competitions and a seventh in nine Serie A fixtures.

Meanwhile, Romelu Lukaku sat on the bench for a third time in four matches, watching on as Kai Havertz stole the headlines as Chelsea’s number nine.

Lukaku actively replaced Abraham in Tuchel’s squad, identified as the missing piece of the Premier League puzzle.

As it transpired, the Belgian has been more of a square peg in a round hole, scoring just five top-flight goals so far.

Rom gone off

Before he left Inter Milan and Abraham went the other way to Roma, many saw this as the logical step in the right direction for Chelsea.

Now, fans must wish they could turn back time and prevent the swap from ever happening.

However, Hutchinson supported the belief that everything occurs for a reason.

“Tammy by the way, what a job he’s done in Serie A, hitting 20 odd goals. Incredible,” said the former Liverpool midfielder.

“I would say no, though, Tammy had to make the move,” he continued when quizzed about Abraham helping Chelsea to the league title.

“To be honest, he was a brave kid.

“I watched (Fikayo) Tomori play for (AC) Milan last night and I’m very envious of these young lads who went to Serie A and the boys who went to the Bundesliga.

“Good luck those kids playing abroad.”

Tomori also decided his destiny would be best served away from South West London, joining Milan shortly before he welcomed a fellow Cobham academy graduate to Italy.

Clearly, the pair have properly benefitted from their adventures in Europe.

Both are now serious contenders for an England call-up, something that might’ve evaded them had they remained at Chelsea.
