Former Chelsea midfielder Craig Burley has questioned if Christopher Nkunku can save the Blues’ season.

Chelsea are really struggling right now and much will be expected of Christopher Nkunku when he returns from injury, but Burley is not sure if the forward will be able to fix everything.

Speaking on ESPN FC, he said: “I don’t know when it’s all going to change for them, maybe when Nkunku’s fit. I don’t know. Maybe he’s going to be the saviour. I’m not sure.”

Mauricio Pochettino’s side are having a tough time finding the back of the net. Their 0-0 draw with Bournemouth means it is back-to-backs games where they have failed to score.

Chelsea, of course, lost 1-0 to Nottingham Forest just before the international break.

Chelsea can improve with Christopher Nkunku

If goals are the problem for Chelsea, then Nkunku looks like he could be the answer.

His record at RB Leipzig shows that he is a deadly forward, while the 25-year-old had no trouble finding the back of the net during the Blues’ pre-season, which was promising.

By the time he is back, though, Chelsea’s campaign could already be over if they keep on dropping points against teams like Bournemouth and Forest.

There is also no guarantee that Nkunku, who cost his current employers £52m, is going to adapt to the Premier League straight away.

It is risky, then, to fall into the trap of just waiting for the France international to return and then hoping that he saves the club. Chelsea need to find a way to start scoring goals now. If they cannot do that, then Nkunku’s comeback is unlikely to do anything for their Premier League campaign.
