Euro 2020: Azpilicueta says Spain must be wary of his 'intelligent' Chelsea teammate

Cesar Azpilicueta said Spain must stop his Chelsea teammate and Italy star Jorginho from controlling the game on Tuesday’s Euro 2020 semi-final clash.

Having spent the opening two games as an unused sub, the Chelsea captain has now established himself as a key player for Spain, particularly in the last two knock-out games.

If he keeps his spot in the starting line-up as expected for the semi-final, he will likely have to face against two Chelsea teammates; Jorginho and Emerson Palmieri.

The former, in particular, is someone that Spain must pay extra attention to, the 31-year-old said.

“We have a chat between Chelsea players — it’s normal,” Azpilicueta told Sky Sport Italia.

“We will see each other on Tuesday on the pitch, but this is football: sometimes, when you are in the national team, you face your [club] teammates.

“It’s natural that on Tuesday we will all give our best for our nations and to qualify for the final.

“Jorginho is a great player, he’s shown both at Chelsea and Italy that he’s important in getting the game going.

“He likes to have the ball and control the game.

“He is an intelligent player — the less he is involved in the game on Tuesday, the more chance we will have of controlling the game.”
