‘Exactly what we wanted’: Tuchel delighted with 23-year-old Chelsea player he took off during final

Thomas Tuchel has praised Chelsea player Mason Mount for his performance at the weekend, despite the fact he missed two golden opportunities to score.

The Blues eventually lost on penalties to Liverpool on Sunday in the Carabao Cup final.

Tuchel’s side had several clear chances to go ahead in a game that finished 0-0 after extra time, including a couple from 23-year-old Mount.

The England international volleyed wide from inside the box during the first half. Also, he missed a one-on-one in the second period by striking the post with his attempt from in the box again.

Chelsea’s manager ended up substituting him off in the 74th minute, but has given a positive verdict on him during today’s press conference.

He’s responded when asked about Mount’s mentality after his wasted chances in front of goal:

“We had huge chances and Mason had huge chances to decide the match for us but he is fine. He did a strong match, he was in these situations and he arrived in good timing and good positions. That’s exactly what we wanted but we just missed a bit of luck,” Tuchel said.

Mount will rise to Chelsea challenge

Mount’s great strength during two-and-a-half years as a senior Chelsea player has been his character.

First of all, he had to deal with the pressure of being Frank Lampard’s golden boy when the academy graduate moved into the first team at Stamford Bridge.

The attacking midfielder’s already had plenty of questions asked of him during his short career, and he always comes up with his answers.

It’s not been the most scintillating campaign from him so far, but he’s still weighed in with an impressive seven goals and eight assists in 35 appearances across all competitions.

The recent form of players like Kai Havertz, Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech threatens to put his starting position under real danger.

However, he loves to perform when his back is against the wall.
