Fabrizio Romano explains why Conor Gallagher hasn’t signed new Chelsea contract yet after pay rise claim

Chelsea have a bit of a dilemma with Conor Gallagher going into the summer.

Conor Gallagher is approaching the final year of his £50,000-a-week contract (Spotrac) at Stamford Bridge, meaning that Chelsea need to hand the midfielder a new one or consider selling him to avoid the risk of losing their asset on a free transfer in 2025.

It has now been claimed by TEAMtalk that Gallagher is demanding a £150,000-a-week deal to remain in west London, which the Blues are not prepared to pay.

Fabrizio Romano has now given his own update on the player’s current situation.

Fabrizio Romano explains why Conor Gallagher is yet to sign a new contract

The Italian journalist has actually dismissed the claim that Gallagher is looking for a huge pay rise and that his demands are holding up a deal being agreed with Chelsea.

Rather, Romano has stated in his Substack column that the club are still deciding what to do with the 24-year-old and are taking financial fair play into account.

According to the transfer expert, Gallagher not signing a new contract yet has nothing to do with him asking for too much money.

Mauricio Pochettino will just be hoping that something can be sorted, as the Englishman has been such a key player for Chelsea this season.

He has made 38 appearances under the Argentine and has captained the team on multiple occasions. This is not someone Pochettino will want to lose.

Is Conor Gallagher part of the England squad?

Gallagher has been in fine form for Chelsea all season, and it has seen him earn another call-up to the England squad.

During this international break, Gareth Southgate’s men will take on Brazil at Wembley before facing Belgium a few days later — a game the Three Lions will also host.

Since breaking into the England set-up, Gallagher has not been able to establish himself in the starting XI. But based on how the Chelsea star has played this term, perhaps he will get the nod to line up in midfield during this round of fixtures.

Only Cole Palmer (7.17) has a higher WhoScored average match rating than Gallagher (7.05) in Pochettino’s squad. Pat Nevin has put the two England internationals in his top three Chelsea players this season.

Gallagher can be an asset to the Three Lions and can continue to be one to Chelsea. But that is only going to happen if the club tie him down to a new contract, which they are nowhere close to doing by the looks of things.
