It looks as if Chelsea feel the need to address their defence in the ongoing January transfer window.

The Blues have been hit with long-term injury problems for Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile, while Axel Disasi is running our of chances to make an impact.

Enzo Maresca felt the need to hand 18-year-old Josh Acheampong a start at centre-back at the weekend against Crystal Palace, with him impressing in his first start.

Reports have stated that the Blues are weighing up bringing Trevoh Chalobah back to the club in the midst of his successful loan spell at Selhurst Park.

However, they have also been linked with another player from the same club, who also has history at Stamford Bridge.

Fabrizio Romano has stated that Chelsea have discussed bringing Marc Guehi back to the club as a defensive reinforcement.

He said: “Chelsea are seriously considering to bring in one more centre back this month. Understand Marc Guehi has been discussed as an option internally, not easy… but he has 18 months left on contract.

“Chelsea also have a recall clause for Trevoh Chalobah, as point of contact.”

Guehi has established himself as a regular in the England side, and will be hoping that remains the case with Thomas Tuchel in charge.

What has Chelsea legend Frank Lampard said about Marc Guehi?

It was during Frank Lampard’s first spell as manager at the club who handed Guehi his Chelsea debut, however was also in charge when he departed.

Lampard is a big fan of the centre-back, and was particularly impressed when watching him during Euro 2024.

He said: “I gave him his debut at Chelsea, a really polite, humble lad. You could see that he had all the attributes that could take him a long way. Particularly, as I say, the personality. He wanted to do well.

“I really liked the idea of working with him at that time because when a young kid comes through and shows that humility and wants to do well, that’s an amazing thing to work with as a coach.

“But to go away and play as he’s played at Palace, to come into an England squad with high pressure and everyone was going, ‘Oh, we’re not sure…’. He’s now one position we’re not talking about which is an amazing achievement from him.”

Guehi seems to fit the profile of what Chelsea are looking for as far as a centre-back goes in Maresca’s system, and will be hopeful that their past relationship has an impact on his decision.
