Ethan Ampadu has been criticised by Wales Online for his performance in last night’s World Cup game against England.

The Chelsea loanee was utilised in midfield for the game where Wales needed to win to stand any chance of qualifying for the knockout stages of the tournament.

It wasn’t to be however, as they were outclassed in the second half. Gareth Southgate’s side ran out 3-0 winners on their way to topping the group.

Ampadu leaves the tournament having featured in all three matches, doing a job in a variety of positions.

However, he couldn’t replicate the display he put in against USA, with Wales Online saying that things got worse as the night went on for the 22-year-old.

Ampadu fails to impress

They said: “Made a couple of really good tackles in the middle in the first half. Competitive in the air too against the likes of Harry Maguire and John Stones. But he was overrun in the second half and faded badly as England took control.”

The Chelsea loanee will now have to focus on his return to club football, and his loan spell with Serie A side Spezia.

The Welshman has made himself an important member of the side in his second consecutive Italian loan spell.

He will be hoping a resolute tournament has started to make an impression on Graham Potter at Stamford Bridge, with him now spending numerous loan spells away from the club without breaking through.

His versatility could certainly be a useful trait for the former Brighton man to have at his disposal, with injuries to first team players often this season leading to difficulties in replacing them.

With the potential midfield exodus of N’golo Kante and Jorginho seemingly on the cards, having more options to hand could be key in the coming seasons.
