‘Failed miserably’: Gary Lineker spots Graham Potter mistake in first-half of Brighton vs Chelsea

Gary Lineker thinks Chelsea boss Graham Potter made a big mistake with his team selection in the first-half against Brighton on Saturday.

Chelsea found themselves 3-0 down at half-time this afternoon in the Premier League at the Amex Stadium.

In-form Brighton star Leandro Trossard opened the scoring inside five minutes after showing quick feet and firing in his shot.

Afterwards, both Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Trevoh Chalobah were both guilting of scoring own goals with deflections into their own net.

It’s a 45 minute performance from the Blues that comes off a run of nine games unbeaten since Potter took charge, but it’s not turning out to be a happy return to his former club Brighton.

Chelsea first-half against Brighton

Lineker has spotted a glaring mistake he thinks Chelsea’s head coach made against Brighton.

He thinks it was an error using Raheem Sterling and Christian Pulisic as wing-backs in the 3-4-2-1 system.

Both are traditionally wingers that love to attack, but have filled into wing-back positions in previous games under Potter to show their versatility.

However, Lineker claimed on Twitter it was a serious problem in the opening 45 minutes away to Brighton.

For Chelsea, it will take something quite special in the second period to turn the game on its head.

It’s a very attacking set up when you include Sterling and Pulisic in wing-back roles, something that has backfired against a strong opposition in Brighton.

There’s no doubt the absence of injured star Reece James leaves a major gap in the XI.
