Craig Bellamy’s impending move to Burnley is set to leave a bit of a void at Wales.

Craig Bellamy is in advanced negotiations to leave his post as Wales head coach to become the new manager of Burnley, despite missing out on World Cup qualification.

The links between Chelsea and the Welsh national team run deep. Mark Hughes excelled at Stamford Bridge before transitioning into a highly successful five-year stint managing Wales.

Additionally, former players like Ethan Ampadu and international centurion Chris Gunter both developed directly through the Chelsea youth ranks.

Eric Ramsey wanted for the Wales job

The Football Association of Wales is already preparing for his departure, with former Chelsea academy assistant Eric Ramsay lined up as a leading contender to replace him, according to Ben Jacobs.

As mentioned, Craig Bellamy is expected to join Burnley as their new head coach and compensation could be around £1 million. Bellamy had given his commitment to Wales, but is now set to depart.

Steve Cooper is also another candidate.

Eric Ramsey’s background in football

Eric Ramsay had a two-year spell at Chelsea. Joining in 2019, Ramsay served as the assistant coach for the Under-23 squad, helping bridge the gap between youth development and first-team football.

His deep roots in Wales heavily influenced his career progression. Having grown up in mid-Wales and capped as a Welsh futsal international, Ramsay completed his UEFA Pro Licence through the FAW system, becoming the youngest British coach to achieve the qualification.

Leading on from this, Ramsey’s Welsh identity and pedigree ultimately led to a senior international role, serving as Rob Page’s assistant coach in 2023.
