As Chelsea fans begin to toil under another new manager in Enzo Maresca, supporters will no doubt be looking back on better days under ‘The Special One’.

Jose Mourinho enjoyed incredible success across his two spells as manager at Stamford Bridge, winning three Premier League titles and a host of domestic trophies.

In his second era at the club they pulled off one of their greatest summer transfer windows ever, completely transforming their attack with the acquisition of Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas.

The likes of Loic Remy and Thibaut Courtois also joined, and Didier Drogba came back for one last dance in West London after previously leaving in 2012.

Filipe Luis lost his ‘happiness’ at Chelsea under Jose Mourinho

Another player signed in the summer of 2014 was Filipe Luis, who had established himself as a top-quality left-back during his time at Atletico Madrid.

The Brazilian scored once for the club, a stunning free-kick in the EFL Cup, and made 26 appearances in all competitions in a season that saw the Premier League title return to Stamford Bridge.

However, Luis was sold at the end of that campaign, with the position being held down by future captain Cesar Azpilicueta.

Luis said to AS after leaving the club that he had begun to lose his happiness while at Chelsea, with that coming from playing less games than he had hoped.

He said: “I had just played more than fifty games and had to share a position… Depending on the match, either Azpilicueta or I played.

“That makes you less important, but I made up for the games I was missing with the national team. I played more than forty games and I didn’t lose my rhythm or my physicality. It’s true that I didn’t feel as important as I do here.

“I never demanded that, what I wanted most was to be a champion because very few people achieve that. I have achieved it. But perhaps the happiness I felt here I didn’t have there. That difference is very significant.”

What is Filipe Luis up to in 2025?

After a playing career that saw him return to Atletico and move on to Flamengo, he retired at the end of 2023.

It has not taken him long to move into management, taking over at the Brazilian club he played his last game for following stints with the U17s and U20s.

Just a month after taking charge, he led Flamengo to his first trophy in management as they beat Atletico Mineiro 4-1 on aggregate to win the Copa do Brazil.

In another era, Luis could have enjoyed a prolonged and successful career at Stamford Bridge, however found himself competing for a place in what was arguably the best defence in the Premier League at the time.
