TalkSPORT’s Trevor Sinclair has claimed that Ross Barkley severely underperformed in his time at Chelsea.

The 28-year-old’s time at Stamford Bridge has come to an end as the club have terminated his contract, despite his time not yet coming to an official end.

It appeared as if they were struggling to shift him away, with him last achieving a move away on loan to Aston Villa for the 2020/21 season.

His time at Chelsea has undoubtedly been a failure, which is a shame considering the promise he showed during his time at Everton.

His England career was also looking great, with him appearing in every game at the 2014 World Cup, and even enjoying a brief spell back in the team in 2019.

Barkley underperformed at Chelsea

However, Sinclair has claimed he failed to do enough in his Chelsea career to give himself the opportunities to show those abilities at Stamford Bridge.

He said: “I don’t think Ross Barkley’s been good enough for Chelsea. He played 20-odd games for Villa last season, so he’s not downed tools, he’s been playing Premier League football.

“Let’s put it into proportion, he’s not fell off a cliff like Dele Alli, he’s just found out, he’s got to a big club, he’s not quite good enough for that club to make an impact. He’s now a free agent.”

It is currently unclear where Barkley’s future lies, although being 28 years of age suggests he still has plenty to offer the right suitor.

He was linked with a return to Goodison Park with Everton, working previously under Chelsea legend and Toffees manager Frank Lampard.

However, the recent rumours suggest a move to Scotland is more likely, with a chance to play Champions League football again on offer with either Celtic or Rangers.
