Chelsea boss Frank Lampard admits that he prefers not to play Raheem Sterling or Joao Felix in the striker position.
It’s been a long-term problem for the Blues to decide who they start up-front.
Frank Lampard, who’s the interim manager until the end of the season, has struggled with the same issue during his first five games in charge. Incidentally, the Blues are on a five-game losing streak and travel to title contenders Arsenal tonight.
We’ve seen a whole host of different attackers play in the centre-forward spot over the course of this campaign.
Most fans will agree that the club need to go out and find themselves a top striker in the summer transfer window, though.
Lampard has been speaking openly about Chelsea’s issues in the forward line.
He’s got Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Kai Havertz as options to play striker, albeit they’ve not always been available to him. He name-checked youngster David Datro Fofana, too.
However, Lampard did say he doesn’t like starting Raheem Sterling or Joao Felix up-front.
“I want a number nine that we can play off and rely on. It is not ideal for me to play Raheem Sterling or Joao Felix in the number nine position, but we had to against Real Madrid,” Lampard said, as quoted by the club’s official website.
In our view, there’s no way the aforementioned duo should be leading the line by themselves.
Felix, 23, operates best in pockets of space and is best suited to a creative number 10 position.
According to The Sun, Felix could rejoin Chelsea next season on another loan spell.
Elsewhere, we don’t like Sterling playing as a striker either.
The 28-year-old England star is so much more effective as a winger, which is where he’s been so dangerous throughout most of his career.
