Chelsea take on Manchester City on Sunday in a game that not too many people will be backing them to win.
City are currently Premier League and European champions, while Chelsea finished 12th in the table last season.
Frank Lampard‘s Chelsea team taking on Pep Guardiola’s treble winners would probably be a much fairer fight and the former midfielder, speaking on The Obi One Podcast, has been discussing what would have happened if those two sides actually met.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men will at least have some confidence going into the game after beating Tottenham Hotspur 4-1 yesterday.
Frank Lampard’s Chelsea vs Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City
When Lampard played for Chelsea, the Blues were able to win honours such as the Champions League and Premier League as well. They are one of the great sides of English football. Still, the 45-year-old is not sure if they would have been able to beat Guardiola’s team.
When asked on The Obi One Podcast if his Chelsea, which had the likes of John Obi Mikel, Didier Drogba and John Terry in it, could have seen off the current title holders, Lampard said: “Deciding who would win across eras is difficult. Tactically, the game’s moved on so much that they would ask us a lot more questions than what we would have got asked in our playing days from most teams.
“Maybe Barcelona or those teams and Bayern Munich. We played against Pep teams, but then I think he’s evolved again where now and on a coaching level where we would have been asked the questions. We would need time. Don’t get me wrong, the group we had and if we were living in the modern day, getting asked the questions to improve, we would’ve reacted to it.”
The old Chelsea could beat this Manchester City team
The thought of Chelsea sides of old coming out on top against the City of today is not far-fetched.
The Blues have obviously had some great teams and have beaten Guardiola sides in the past. In a one-off game, a win would have been more than possible.

Beating them to the title is another story, though. They just have so much firepower right now, largely because of Erling Haaland.
While Terry in his prime may have been able to deal with the striker, the rest of the division cannot. In truth, then, Guardiola’s City are arguably the best side of the Premier League era.
