Frank Lampard claims he already sees 22-year-old Chelsea player as a ‘leader’

Frank Lampard has highlighted Enzo Fernandez as a “leader” at Chelsea.

Enzo Fernandez, who’s just 22, is part of the Chelsea squad currently preparing for tomorrow’s trip to Spain ahead of a European showdown with Real Madrid.

The Blues visit the Bernabeu for the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final tie, with the second leg taking place next week at Stamford Bridge.

It’s the third year in a row the clubs will lock horns in the knockouts rounds of the Champions League.

First of all, Chelsea won the semi-final clash between them in the 2020/21 season en route to winning the top European prize. However, Madrid had their revenge by winning the quarter-final meeting in the 2021/22 during their run to winning the Champions League.

Chelsea’s caretaker manager Lampard has been speaking in the build-up to Wednesday’s night match against Madrid.

When discussing leadership traits in the Blues dressing room, Lampard did single out Fernandez as a young talent with those qualities.

The Argentine midfielder was signed under Graham Potter’s tenure back in the January transfer window. It sounds like he’s grown into a senior figure in the space of a few months.

“We have bought in some younger players over the course of this season. We have to give them a chance to develop into being the leaders we want them to be,” Lampard said in tonight’s press conference, as quoted by the club’s official YouTube channel.

“Enzo is doing the media, you’ll speak to him. In him I see a leader. He’s 22 years of age… Games like tomorrow are a great chance to perform and show that personality that makes you a proper leader.”

We’re not too surprised to hear Fernandez picked out as a leader.

From the outside looking in, he does appear to have a great aura about him and such a great mentality for someone his age.

He’s immediately becoming a key player in the Chelsea line-up and one of the first names on the team sheet, making light work of adjusting to a new league and new country.

Fernandez recently said he’s linking up well with Kai Havertz and Joao Felix on the pitch. Let’s hope the trio are all on top of their game tomorrow!
