Timo Werner impressed on his Chelsea debut on Monday night, as the team started the new Premier League season with a 3-1 away victory against Brighton.

Frank Lampard’s side earned three points and went into half-time with a one-goal lead, after Jorginho had slotted in a penalty that was awarded when goalkeeper Mat Ryan fouled Werner in the box.

Brighton equalised early in the second-half with a low shot from distance the found the bottom corner, but almost instantly Blues right-back Reece James restored the lead with a thunderbolt goal from long-range.

French centre-back Kurt Zouma added a third shortly after with his goal from a corner and wrapped up a win for a side that are under huge pressure to do well this season due to a busy transfer window.

Lampard singled out new signing Werner for praise following his eye-catching debut, as the centre-forward showed his electric pace at times and some real intelligent moments.

“I love the way Timo pops up in different areas . He’s not a frontman that attaches to centre-backs so much, sometimes he starts off from a little bit deeper, when he goes he goes,” Lampard told Sky Sports’ Main Event channel (10:25pm, 14 September).

“For the penalty the ball was slightly overplayed but he still gets there and he has that about him. I thought we saw a lot of signs from Timo Werner tonight and what he’s going to bring.”

Chelsea fans saw new boy Kai Havertz in action against Brighton, but it was teammate Werner that stole the show with a really encouraging display despite failing to get on the scoresheet.

Werner earned the foul for Jorginho’s penalty and would have been one-on-one with the goalkeeper if not for a better pass from attacking midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

The 24-year-old German striker injected some serious quality to the team with his pace and movement, so there should be plenty more to come from him in the coming weeks.
