Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has explained that Timo Werner is putting extra work on the training ground into his finishing, as he tries to break a recent goal drought that is being heavily discussed by supporters.
The German centre-forward has not scored in his last nine appearances across all competitions, albeit he’s still contributed with three assists during that time and has been getting into goalscoring positions regularly.
Despite the fact he’s scored eight goals so far this season, he’s been guilty of missing some golden opportunities in front of goal during some recent matches.
The 24-year-old has mainly been used as a left-winger during the past couple of months due to injuries elsewhere, but many feel he should be given the nod in the central area ahead of strikers Olivier Giroud and Tammy Abraham.

Lampard has shown big faith in Werner with his latest comments detailing the efforts going on behind the scenes from him.
“We always do extra finishing in training and I feel it’s very important to do specific work for strikers. I never felt you could score freely at the weekend if you didn’t work on it throughout the week, so that’s a big part of what we do,” Lampard told Sky Sports.
“Timo has had a period where it hasn’t gone for him and strikers get judged on goals. He’s getting into positions very regularly and I feel that once he gets a goal or two, we’ll see many more from him. We’re working hard in training as we always do.”
Werner is quite clearly a prolific goalscorer, netting 95 goals in 159 appearances for his former German club RB Leipzig.
The speedster is clearly a big favourite of the manager given he’s started every single league match this season and it must be a real confidence for him that he’s got Lampard’s backing.
