‘Frustrating’: Shearer claims 25-year-old Chelsea player looked annoyed with himself during yesterday’s performance

Alan Shearer noticed Chelsea’s Timo Werner look visibly frustrated with himself during parts of his latest performance yesterday.

Chelsea ended up beating Luton Town 3-2 away from home in midweek during an FA Cup fifth round thriller.

Werner played a massive role in the Blues turning around their deficit to the Championship side, scoring once and assisting two goals.

However, the 25-year-old wasn’t at his very sharpest for 90 minutes, especially in the first half.

It will be a massive relief for the German attacker to score his seventh of the season and contribute massively in a win. His manager Thomas Tuchel said in his post-match interview he played “really well”, too.

There are definitely areas of his all-round game he needs to improve, though.

BBC pundit Shearer says Werner was beating himself up during the match when things weren’t coming off for him. In fairness, he did notice a big improvement in his game when he had the confidence from his goal midway through the second half.

“He had been struggling. It was a frustrating performance up until [his goal], the ball was bouncing off him, his runs weren’t as good as they should have been. It is a very good ball, a good touch and a very clever finish actually,” Shearer told BBC One’s televised coverage of Luton vs Chelsea.

“But up until then his performance was pretty poor because there was nothing sticking to him and he was frustrated himself. After the goal he was a much better player. You could tell the confidence was back in him. His movement was a lot better after that. Of course, he sets Lukaku up for the winner.”

Chelsea need confident attackers

It’s proven time and time again that strikers can go on goalscoring runs when they’re playing with confidence. In contrast, it can be a really dark place to be as a forward with huge doubts over your game.

Werner’s 2021/22 season so far has been a disappointment, and he looks a million miles from the player he was at ex-club RB Leipzig.

Hopefully, yesterday’s contribution can spark him into life because he’s making plenty of small errors.

Blues teammate Romelu Lukaku is another one in the squad that looks short of confidence.

Chelsea’s attackers Kai Havertz and Hakim Ziyech are great example in the last couple of months of what confidence can do for a player, as both have a real spring in their step and are massively impressing.
