Gabby Agbonlahor tells Chelsea to drop £25m player and sign Arsenal star as replacement

Chelsea’s Robert Sanchez isn’t good enough to be Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper.

That is according to talkSPORT’s Gabby Agbonlahor.

Robert Sanchez, 26, joined Chelsea back in the summer in a £25million deal (Sky Sports) from Brighton.

The Spanish shot-stopper has five clean sheets in 15 Blues appearances so far. In fact, Football.London reported earlier this month that Sanchez has impressed plenty of people at Chelsea so far and may get the whole season to prove himself.

However, it’s now been suggested that Arsenal and England gloveman Aaron Ramsdale, 25, should be signed to replace Sanchez at Stamford Bridge.

Robert Sanchez spot

Agbonlahor thinks that Sanchez’s status as Chelsea’s main goalkeeper should be under threat.

He’s put forward a case for Arsenal’s Ramsdale being a perfect upgrade in-between the sticks.

When discussing Ramsdale on talkSPORT (8:57am, 22 November), Agbonlahor said: “If I’m him, I’m leaving 100%. [Mikel] Arteta tried to make out like he’s got two number ones and he can make subs with keepers. Let’s be honest, since he’s said that, it’s been [David] Raya non-stop.

“Raya’s his number one, there’s something about Ramsdale he’s not sure of. If I’m Ramsdale, he could miss out on the Euros with England if you’re not playing for another six months.

“You’re 25 years old, Chelsea need a goalkeeper, Sanchez isn’t good enough for Chelsea.”

TalkSPORT host Alan Brazil replied: “I’ve got nothing against Raya right, I’m not against him. But I don’t see what Ramsdale has done wrong to lose his place.”

Agbonlahor added: “I think if you look at Chelsea, Chelsea’s goalkeeper is not good enough for what Chelsea have got in that squad, they need a better goalkeeper. Ramsdale walks into that Chelsea team and I think he does well for them.

“If I’m Ramsdale, definitely in January, I’m pushing that through, but will Arteta block it and say no, I want a top number two? That’s the problem.”

Aaron Ramsdale interest

TalkSPORT claimed earlier this month that Ramsdale is emerging as a top target for Mauricio Pochettino at Chelsea. Apparently, the Blues could play the long game with him and make a move for Arsenal’s £50million-rated star next summer.

As it stands, Ramsdale’s currently sat on the bench at both club and international level. He’s a top keeper with great reflexes and quality on the ball, but isn’t getting much of a look-in this season.

In our view, Sanchez is still trying to cement his long-term position in Chelsea’s XI. There’s a lot of positive signs, though.

Ramsdale isn’t the sort of replacement that screams huge upgrade on Sanchez.
