TalkSPORT pundit Gabriel Agbonlahor has just claimed that Chelsea own five “top” players in the same position on the pitch.

There’s certainly still some big question marks around the Chelsea squad, which has cost so much to assemble in recent windows and is still relatively inexperienced. However, there’s plenty of individuals with serious quality for Blues head coach Enzo Maresca to work with.

Speaking in a recent interview with ESPN, Maresca said Chelsea’s squad made him want to join. He did just that in the summer when he left promoted Leicester City to take the reigns in the Stamford Bridge dugout.

Now, the Blues defence has just received some big praise from a voice in the media.

Chelsea have five top centre-backs

According to Gabriel Agbonlahor, Chelsea are fortunate to have five quality centre-halves available to them going into next season. He’s name-dropped the top central defenders at the clubs as Benoit Badiashile, Levi Colwill, Tosin Adarabioyo, Wesley Fofana and Axel Disasi.

He told talkSPORT: “We were talking about the centre-halves they’ve got. Badiashile and Colwill your left-sided ones. Right side, Tosin, Fofana and Disasi. That’s five top centre-halves you’ve got.”

Thiago Silva heir needs to come forward

While we agree that the Chelsea defenders mentioned above have obvious talent and potential, it’s hard to argue that any of them are yet proven as top-class centre-halves. It’s perhaps a tad bit generous from Agbonlahor.

The hope must be that at least two of them step up and emerge as a consistent centre-back partnership for Chelsea next season.

Following the exit of Thiago Silva from the club this summer on a free transfer, it falls on others to provide the leadership and calmness at the back that he oozed so effortlessly.

It’s been claimed in a reported by GiveMeSport, Chelsea will start with Colwill and Fofana next season. On paper, it looks like a really exciting partnership, but so far in pre-season we’re yet to see them as a two-man combination.
