Gary Cahill now names the Chelsea defender he has really enjoyed watching this season

Chelsea have been disappointing this season, but Gary Cahill has still been impressed with a few of their defenders.

In fact, the former Chelsea man says he has really enjoyed watching one of them play.

Mauricio Pochettino has mostly used a back four this term, often going with a set-up consisting of Axel Disasi, Thiago Silva, Levi Colwill and Malo Gusto.

Had captain Reece James been able to remain fit, though, you suspect that he would have been a regular under the Argentine.

With James constantly picking up injuries, Gusto has come into the side to play at right-back, while Colwill has often started on the opposite side despite being a central defender. Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp praised the latter for his passing ability last month.

Gary Cahill thinks Chelsea defender has ‘bags of potential’

Cahill obviously knows a lot about defending, having a very successful career as a centre-back.

During his time at Chelsea, the retired England international helped the Blues to win two Premier League titles, one Champions League trophy and much more.

Now out of the game, he has been watching his old side this season and has really enjoyed Colwill’s performances.

In an interview with the Evening Standard, he said: “I’ve enjoyed watching Levi, who is developing all the time. He has got bags and bags of potential.”

Cahill also claimed that Disasi and Gusto have adapted quite well since arriving at Stamford Bridge.

Will Levi Colwill be available for Chelsea vs Burnley?

Colwill has missed Chelsea’s last two games because of injury and was also left out of the England squad.

Premier League football returns this weekend with Chelsea hosting Burnley, but it does not look like Colwill will be available.

The 21-year-old has not been seen in training, meaning that Ben Chilwell is likely to start at left-back on Saturday.

With Colwill not even being a left-back, the above is probably what Chelsea supporters want.

Being a more natural option, the 27-year-old should be able to give Pochettino’s side more of an attacking threat down the left flank. TalkSPORT pundit Perry Groves was quite critical of his performance against Brazil last Saturday.
