Gary Lineker reacted on Twitter a couple of times this afternoon to Chelsea’s emphatic 6-0 thrashing of Southampton.
The Blues produced a vintage performance at St Mary’s in the Premier League, which is exactly what was needed after back-to-back defeats against Real Madrid and Brentford.
Mason Mount (two), Timo Werner (two), Marcos Alonso and Kai Havertz were all on the scoresheet for the visitors.
Thomas Tuchel’s side consolidated third in the league table with their victory, so will now feel they have some momentum going into Tuesday’s trip to Madrid. They have the huge challenge of trying to overturn a 3-1 deficit from the first leg in the Champions League quarter-finals.
Chelsea must be over the moon to find some form in front of goal, but it could’ve been double figures if not for some inspired saves from opposition goalkeeper Fraser Forster.
Lineker delivered some humorous responses on social media during the Southampton demolition:
Huge Chelsea decision
In fairness, Werner doesn’t belong in Chelsea’s best XI this season when you consider his inconsistent form.
However, he’s maybe given Tuchel a selection headache going into the Madrid showdown.
He’s got the confidence of scoring two goals at the weekend. Also, he hit the woodwork on three different occasions during the first half.
It’s going to take something extraordinary to beat Madrid at the Bernabeu, so perhaps it needs a bit of craziness by starting the inconsistent Werner. For certain, on his day, he’s can torment opponents.
