Gary Lineker reacts to Chelsea player's winning UEFA Champions League award

Gary Lineker has had his say on Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante’s being awarded the UEFA Champions League midfielder of the season award.

The 30-year-old deservedly won the award for his impressive performances in Chelsea’s Champions League title-winning campaign last season.

To put it into perspective, the midfielder was named man of the matches in four of the seven knockout matches Chelsea played in the tournament.

Kante, who had arguably the shortest speech among the winners, won quite comfortably as well, unsurprisingly.

According to UEFA’s official website, the France international received 267 points from the voting, while second-placed Kevin de Bruyne had 197 points.

Meanwhile, fellow Chelsea midfielder Jorginho only ended up in third place with 149 points.

Instead, the Italy international won the biggest award, the UEFA men’s player of the year.

Mason Mount (15 points) finished joint fourth alongside Manchester City’s Ilkay Gundogan, while Kai Havertz also made the top ten with five points.

“Quite right too. Well played N’Golo Kante,” the former England international wrote on Twitter.

Overall, Kante made 13 appearances in the Champions League last season, in which he helped Chelsea kept nine clean sheets and only conceded four goals.

Alongside Kante, Edouard Mendy was also named the Champions League goalkeeper of the season, beating Manchester City’s Ederson and Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois to the award.

Thomas Tuchel won the UEFA Champions League coach of the year after making such a big impact since arriving at Chelsea back in January.
