Gary Lineker’s six-word reaction after hearing Frank Lampard could be going back to Chelsea

Gary Lineker is the same as most Chelsea fans right now, which is that they are completely shocked that Frank Lampard is on the brink of returning to Stamford Bridge.

Frank Lampard, who was sacked by the Blues in 2021, could be about to return on a short-term basis.

He’s currently out of work after his dismissal by Everton earlier this season.

According to journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter yesterday, the 44-year-old will return to Chelsea on a short-term basis as caretaker manager.

Lampard has reportedly accepted a deal to take temporary charge while the club continues its search for its next full-time boss.

Bruno Saltor took charge as the interim boss for Chelsea’s 0-0 draw against Liverpool at the weekend, but it sounds like Lampard will pick up the reigns until the end of the season.

It’s truly remarkable that the Blues icon could be in the dugout to lead them against Real Madrid next week in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Lineker has posted his six-word response to the Lampard rumours:

“Well, I didn’t see that coming,” Lineker wrote on Twitter.

Lampard never got to finish Chelsea’s European campaign during the 2020/21 campaign because of his sacking. He actually watched Thomas Tuchel take charge mid-season and win the Champions League trophy.

It would be typical Chelsea for Lampard to go full circle and win the Champions League this year for a third time in the club’s history.

If appointed, Lampard already knows so many players within the squad and did enjoy some success when managing them the first time around.

We expect the likes of Mason Mount, Reece James and Thiago Silva to heavily feature during Lampard 2.0.
