Giroud Signed
Chelsea signed one player on Deadline Day. The Blues announced the signing of Olivier Giroud from Arsenal. The fee is suggested to be around £17.5 million for the Frenchman. Giroud’s playing time at Arsenal became limited following the summer signing of Alexandre Lacazette, and with the club signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the Gunners allowed Giroud to depart. The 31-year-old has been given the number 18 shirt at Stamford Bridge, and has signed an 18-month contract at the club with an option on an extra year. The Frenchman is available immediately for Chelsea, and could make his debut on Monday as Chelsea travel to Watford.
Batshuayi Loaned
In order to allow Giroud to join the club, Michy Batshuayi left the club to sign for Borussia Dortmund on loan. Following Aubameyang’s move to Arsenal, the German side signed the Belgian as a replacement. Batshuayi has been the periphery for Chelsea this season, playing back-up to Alvaro Morata and even Eden Hazard when deployed as a false nine. With the World Cup coming up in the summer, the Belgian has made the temporary switch to the Bundesliga in order to gain valuable first team minutes to remain in contention for the Belgium squad.
Deadline Day Loans
Batshuayi wasn’t the only Chelsea player to leave the club on a loan basis on Deadline Day. Todd Kane returned from his loan spell at Dutch side FC Groningen, and has moved on loan to League One side Oxford United. Another player to depart on a short-term basis was Kasey Palmer. His loan spell at Huddersfield was terminated towards the start of the month, and he has signed for Derby County until the end of the season. They join a long list of Chelsea players who have left on loan this month, as well as many players who are already out on loan.
