Glenn Hoddle says Chelsea’s players have caused themselves a real ‘problem’ now

There were a lot of positives for Chelsea to take from their 4-4 draw with Manchester City just before the international break.

However, the club’s former manager Glenn Hoddle has told talkSPORT (16/11/2023 at 08:22) that their performance against the Premier League champions has also now caused a problem.

Mauricio Pochettino would have been pleased with so many of his players after the match.

Raheem Sterling played extremely well and managed to get his name on the scoresheet, while Cole Palmer was able to keep his cool and dispatch another crucial penalty.

Chelsea have set the standard

For Hoddle, Chelsea played so well against City that they have now set such a high standard for themselves, which could be a bit of a problem.

Discussing their recent performance on talkSPORT, the former England boss said: “That performance from Chelsea, that’s the standard that they have set themselves now. The players have given themselves a problem.

“They have to play like that against every team. You have to be as sharp as that, as hungry as that, front foot, confident. If they do that, they have proven they are as good as anyone else.”

Chelsea have no more excuses

Chelsea definitely have set the standard following their 4-4 draw with City. They went toe-to-toe against probably the best team in the world, managing to put four past them.

The Blues also have players coming back from injury, with Christopher Nkunku expected to make his full debut for the club next month.

Ultimately, there can be no more excuses for Chelsea, nowhere for Pochettino’s side to hide. We have all seen what their level is when they are at their best and know that their team could get much stronger when the likes of Nkunku and Romeo Lavia are back.

Of course, not everyone is going to give Chelsea space to attack like City and Tottenham Hotspur, who leave their backlines vulnerable when they go forward themselves.

Newcastle United, for example, certainly will not, and they are Chelsea’s next opponents. It is now up to Pochettino to find a way to get his team to perform against such teams, ones who do sit back and will limit the amount of counter-attacks the Blues get.
