Glenn Hoddle sends warning to Graham Potter over potential Chelsea sacking

Glenn Hoddle has warned Graham Potter that while his role at Chelsea is relatively safe, the next few games could lead to his facing the axe.

A recent report from The Athletic suggested that Potter will have “years, not months” before he will have to worry about potentially losing his job at Chelsea.

The Chelsea board reportedly still consider Potter one of the best managers in the game, despite poor results in the last couple of months.

To be fair, Potter has had to deal with an unprecedented injury crisis with as many as 11 players out injured at some point in January.

Hoddle, however, believes that an early Champions League exit and falling further away from the top four spots could spell an end to Potter’s short era at Stamford Bridge.

“Chelsea could become one of the best teams in the country and one of the best teams in Europe very quickly with the quality they have,” the former Blues player-manager told 90min.

“If they [the signings] all hit the ground running, they mould together, and goals start coming, Chelsea could turn around [their fortunes] very quickly.

“If Chelsea fans and the owner see this happening, then I think Potter will be safe and will be there next season.

“They’ll only sack him if results go the other way, and they end up 13th or 14th in the league, they get knocked out by Dortmund in the Champions League.

“The results in the next month are going to be key.”

Considering Chelsea’s recent run of results, both are actual possibilities at this point.

The performance at the London Stadium last Saturday was a step in the direction, but unless Chelsea can improve their goalscoring rate, every match will continue to be an uphill battle.
