Glenn Murray said Mason Mount has become indispensable under new manager Graham Potter because of his defensive intelligence and work rate.
Potter has surprisingly been very bold with his team rotation arriving at Chelsea in early September.
He made seven changes in the team when Chelsea beat Wolves last week and then made changes again in the second win over AC Milan.
Mount, however, remains on the team. He has been the only Chelsea outfielder to play in every game under Potter.
According to Murray, Potter trusts the England international to lead his team’s pressing.
“That’s why I think Graham does like him,” the former Brighton striker said about Mount’s work rate on Premier League Productions (via Optus Sport).
“I think they [the Chelsea players] are learning how Graham wants them to play out of possession.
“You can when they press, Mount is looking over his shoulders, checking if people are coming with him. Because he understands, he just makes sure that his teammates are on the same system.
“They’re intelligent — at that level, you have to be intelligent to understand what you have to do. I think Graham would be able to get over what he needs to fairly quickly.”
Managers always speak highly of Mount’s ability to execute plans on the pitch, so it is hardly a surprise that he is one of the first names on the team sheet.
Potter seems to be willing to pull Mount out of the game early, however, which can hopefully help reduce the midfielder’s workload, which has been an issue in the past few years.
