‘Go and enjoy it’: Theo Walcott thinks 22-year-old Chelsea man isn’t enjoying his football right now

Former Arsenal forward Theo Walcott does not think Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk is enjoying his football at the moment.

Mykhailo Mudryk has had a difficult time at Chelsea since joining from Shakhtar Donetsk, but Walcott wants to see him having fun on the football pitch.

Speaking about the winger on Sky Sports before the Blues’ 0-0 draw with Bournemouth yesterday, Walcott said: “I would say he just needs to have, and I mean he has got a manager right now who’s supporting him in the right sense, is that arm around him that’s going to give him that confidence — same like Raheem [Sterling] as well — and not to be negative.

“Like I said, one of the first things is to think forward. You’re going to have a lot of the ball and like Jimmy was saying, you can reserve your energy as well to some capacity. And yeah, just trust yourself, enjoy it, just go and enjoy it and I feel like he’s not sort of enjoying his football.”

Mudryk has not scored in any of the four Premier League appearances he has made this season, though most of those appearances have come from off the bench.

The 22-year-old also failed to net in the 17 games he played for Chelsea last term, meaning he is yet to open his account in blue.

Mykhailo Mudryk not alone

Mudryk is probably not the only Chelsea player who is not enjoying his football at present.

The Blues drop points every week and have been doing so for a long time, so it would be a surprise if anyone was happy with life at Stamford Bridge right now.

Things are looking bleak, but it is a long season. Maybe things will get better for Mudryk and his team-mates.

Still, after the starts the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool have made, two of Chelsea’s top-four rivals, Champions League qualification is already beginning to look out of reach.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men are eight points adrift of the Champions League spots, a gap that is only going to get bigger if they do not start winning games. Their upcoming clash against Aston Villa already looks like a must-win.
