‘Goes under the radar’: Stuart Pearce says fans don’t understand how good 23-year-old Chelsea player really is

Stuart Pearce has praised Chelsea and England star Mason Mount by claiming that he often goes under the radar.

Mount, 23, is an attacking midfielder that plays an important role for both club and country.

The playmaker been the player of the year in back-to-back seasons at Chelsea, albeit he’s still trying to find his best form this year.

Meanwhile, England boss Gareth Southgate regularly includes him in his starting line-up at international level.

Mount started the opening two games of England’s campaign at the World Cup last week, but was rested and didn’t play in Tuesday’s win over Wales.

Mount goes under the radar

Pearce has explained that Chelsea’s talisman is actually a really important cog in the England system, something that may be overlooked by fans because there’s so much flair in other attacking areas of the pitch.

When discussing Mount, Pearce told talkSPORT: “He’s one of those individuals that goes under the radar. I think England fans like saying ‘what is Mount doing in the team’ because he’s not as silky as the boys in the wide areas, but I think he’s got a really good purpose in the team.”

Mount has been used as the most advanced individual of a midfield trio in two England games at the World Cup. If he plays in that role again against Senegal, you can expect him to clock up a lot miles both in and out of possession.

Mount will continue to be a controversial topic with England supporters, who ultimately want to see as many of the nation’s eye-catching players on the pitch.

However, the Chelsea man can offer so much to this XI when he’s in the mood.

His spot in the team shouldn’t be a given this weekend given the form of others around him, but he may slot into the system perfectly to play against an energetic opponent in Senegal.
