‘Got it wrong’: Graham Potter makes claim after Chelsea’s 4-1 defeat away to Brighton

Graham Potter confesses he may have made a tactical mistake in Chelsea’s hammering defeat against Brighton on the weekend.

The travelling Blues supporters had a Saturday afternoon to forget at the Amex Stadium, with their side suffering a heavy 4-1 loss against Brighton.

Chelsea found themselves behind by three goals at half-time, with Leandro Trossard opening the scoring early on during the Premier League fixture. Afterwards, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Trevoh Chalobah both netted own goals before the interval.

Kai Havertz scored his third league goal of the season to reduce the deficit early into the second-half, but Pascal Gross finished the scoring late on to earn Brighton a deserved three points.

Potter confesses mistake against Brighton

Chelsea’s boss, who received stick from the home crowd on his return to his former club, did admit in his post-match analysis that he may have made an error in his tactical approach.

The 47-year-old head coach suggests the Blues may have struggled tactically against Brighton due to his decisions.

“Maybe we got it wrong from a tactical perspective. That’s my responsibility. I have to do better there,” Potter told BBC Radio 5 Live.

Potter didn’t pinpoint the exact area he felt it went wrong against Brighton.

However, Gary Lineker delivered a fairly harsh assessment on Potter’s decision to play Raheem Sterling and Christian Pulisic at wing-backs at the Amex.

It’s now just four games left for Chelsea before the winter break to make room for the World Cup.

The Blues face two teams above them in the league, Arsenal and Newcastle United, who are both having excellent seasons.

Potter’s side sit fifth in the league table after today’s defeat and are three points adrift of the top four, so it could feel very bleak around Stamford Bridge if they lose the upcoming league fixtures before the break.

In addition, there’s a Champions League group stage match against Dinamo Zagreb with little riding on it. There is a daunting Carabao Cup third round tie against Manchester City, too.
