Granit Xhaka was coy with the media after being asked about transfer reports linking him with a move to Chelsea this summer.

Xhaka has emerged as one of the main targets for the Blues this summer at the request of Xabi Alonso, who found success working alongside him at Bayer Leverkusen.

The signing would represent a significant shift in the club’s transfer policy, after seemingly refusing to bring in players with experience in the past.

Last night saw Xhaka put in a strong performance for Switzerland as they progressed past Algeria in the World Cup Round of 32, and after the game he was asked about what his future at club level looked like.

When prompted by Blick regarding rumours of a move to Chelsea, Xhaka said:

“That’s not my job. That’s what I have my management for. I want to concentrate fully on the World Cup.”

So far, the midfielder is yet to make a comment regarding his future, although has already reportedly agreed personal terms with the Blues.

If Chelsea’s second bid is rejected, they are going to ask Xhaka to publicly announce his desire to leave in order to crank the pressure on Sunderland to allow him to leave.

So far, the Blues have lowballed with their offers after taking into account the fact he will turn 34 early into the 2026/27 season.

BlueCo are proving stubborn.

This may be linked with the fact that the owners are reluctant to actually sign Xhaka, although are moving ahead with negotiations as a result of demands from Alonso.

Chelsea fans should take some encouragement from the fact that the club are willing to fully back a manager after not giving that service to the likes of Enzo Maresca and Mauricio Pochettino before.

Even if they do manage to sign Xhaka, he will not be joining up with the pre-season tour until late, with him set for an extended break following Switzerland’s World Cup campaign.
