Harry Redknapp expects Frank Lampard to reinstate 24-year-old as regular starter at Chelsea

Harry Redknapp believes Mason Mount will soon be back to playing regularly for Chelsea following Frank Lampard’s return as a caretaker manager.

It is not exactly fair to say that Mount lost his spot at Chelsea under Graham Potter.

The 24-year-old’s recent absences are mostly due to his nursing a pelvic injury which also forced him to miss out on international duty with England last month.

That said, it is hard to argue that even before the injury, he had not played as often as he did under both Thomas Tuchel and Lampard.

Now that Potter has left Chelsea and Lampard is in charge until the end of the season, Redknapp expects Mount to feature more regularly.

“[Lampard] is a big fan of Mount, isn’t he?” Redknapp told talkSPORT when speaking about his nephew’s Chelsea return.

“When he’s [at Chelsea] before, I think he felt that [Mount] was an important player for Chelsea.

“I would be very surprised if he didn’t come back into the team very quickly.

“So, good for him.

“Listen, he gives everyone the opportunity. He’s got a great squad to work with.

“I mean… Real Madrid home and away… what Champions League games…

“If he could pull that off and beat them over the two games, it would be a real feather in his cap.

“Who knows at the end of the season? Maybe he won’t get the job, but at least it’ll put him back in the frame for anything else that might come up.”

It is true that when managers return to their former clubs, they tend to rely on the players whom they know very well, for obvious reasons.

Jose Mourinho, for example, reinstated John Terry as a regular starter in the club’s Premier League-winning campaign in 2014/15.

Mount, as well as a few other players, including Edouard Mendy, could therefore benefit from Lampard’s return.
