Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink encouraged Timo Werner to relax when he enters into pressured situations for Chelsea, speaking on Sky Sports.
Werner was front stage and centre during the Blues Premier League victory over Leicester City last night.
The German was denied a clear penalty by Mike Dean in the first half, before VAR chalked off two of his goals.
Dean did eventually award Werner a spot kick after he was brought down in the box by Wesley Fofana.
Although the 25-year-old might feel the footballing gods are against him, he could’ve aided his own cause a lot better.
His first disallowed strike was clearly offside, a theme that’s run throughout his Chelsea career.
According the Premier League website, only three players have been flagged offside more times than Werner this season.
VAR rightly ruled out his second for handball, as he untidily bundled his effort into Leicester’s net.
Frustration continues to mount around the centre-forward’s inability to convert his chances, irritation that was echoed by Hasselbaink.
“What I do like, he (Werner) puts himself in positions where he gets opportunities,” said the former Chelsea striker.
“The last bit he has to do better. He has to be calmer and has to be more calculated.
“Because having six or seven goals is not enough, it is not a good return. He knows that.
“Does he give up? No. Do I like that? Yes. But in big games, you have one or two chances. You have to be there and you have to make that difference.”
There is a sense that Werner just needs a restart and attack another campaign with fresh optimism.
He’s netted just twice in the league since the middle of February. He won’t fancy carrying that hangover into the following term.
