‘Hasn’t had a great night’: Steve McManaman suggests Chelsea player was far from his best against AC Milan

Steve McManaman claims Chelsea’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang wasn’t at his best against AC Milan despite scoring his second goal for the club.

The Blues have had a rocky start in their Champions League group, but they responded in perfect fashion last night by beating Italian giants Milan 3-0 at Stamford Bridge.

Aubameyang, along with Wesley Fofana and Reece James, scored in the emphatic European victory.

It means Graham Potter remains undefeated as Chelsea boss, so he’s definitely making a strong first impression with the fanbase.

Aubameyang against AC Milan

Pundit Steve McManaman, who was a co-commentator in yesterday’s televised game, suggested that Aubameyang wasn’t quite at the races during the match.

However, he praised the 33-year-old striker for his decisive goal in the second-half. He got on the end of a cross from wing-back James to finish inside the box.

“He hasn’t had a great night, actually, Aubameyang in his all round play but he gets the goal. It’s simple for Aubameyang. He feeds off that and has done all his career. He’s not missing from there,” McManaman said on BT Sport 2 (9:15pm, 5 October).

What we need

For now, Aubameyang merits his place in this Chelsea line-up if he can be clinical in front of goal.

His all-round game should improve the longer he plays with his new teammates, but right now he’s justifying his team selection with the golden touch around the box.

BBC pundit Matt Upson said after last night’s game that Aubameyang looks happy at Stamford Bridge.

The burden of Chelsea’s No.9 shirt has weighed heavily on so many previous Blues players, but the new man has the confidence and quality to spearhead the attack.
