Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has praised for Mason Mount as Chelsea secured a 1-0 win over London rivals Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday.
The 22-year-old had another very good game in the central attacking midfield role under Thomas Tuchel.
He had several opportunities to score and admitted that he could have done better, but Tuchel must be pleased with the midfielder’s tireless performance.
Mount often found intelligent pockets of space in between the lines and created three chances in the game (joint-most alongside Reece James).
Speaking after the game, Hasselbaink said Tuchel has a rare talent at his disposal in the young midfielder.
“You don’t see a lot of them,” the former Chelsea ace told Premier League Productions about Mount’s selfless performance.
“It is so hard to get, that mentality, that understanding of knowing [when] to step out two yards so [his teammates] could have a little more space.
“Doing that for the team as well — not a lot of players are prepared to do that for the team.
“Sometimes it’s forgotten, but he has that, and he has so much more to come.”
It is very interesting that Tuchel has deployed Mount further up the pitch, to put pressure on opponents’ defence.
This would likely decrease Mount’s defensive numbers compared to when playing as a No.8.
But as we saw against Spurs, it also made it really difficult for the opponents to build from the back.
However, as we’ve covered before, Mount’s securing his spot in that position likely comes at the expense of several other players, particularly Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic.
