Kai Havertz said the German and English Chelsea players have been in touch with each other ahead of the “special” Euro 2020 round of 16 clash between the two national teams.
Unfortunately, it seems unlikely that we will see the six Chelsea players will all be on the pitch together on Tuesday.
Unlike Havertz and Antonio Rudiger who have featured in every game in the tournament so far, it remains unclear whether the other four will even feature in the game.
Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell still train separately from the England squad following close contact with Billy Gilmour. While Timo Werner and Reece James have not been regular starters so far.
But playing against club teammates in a major international tournament is certainly a special occasion. And these Chelsea players unsurprisingly have been in contact with each other ahead of the game.
“Timo, Toni, and I get on very well with the three Chelsea players [in the England squad], so there is always contact,” Havertz said during his press conference on Sunday (via Sport1).
“It’s clear that you sometimes have a chat or two before the game.
“It’s not like we’re in contact every day, but before a game like this, you sometimes write each other a text message.”
While Havertz is clearly aware of how important the match is going to be for the two nations, he remains cool-headed, as we would expect.
“For me, it’s a special game,” he added.
“In general, though, I approach the game like any other.
“We will do everything to come off the pitch as winners.”
