Chelsea defender Malo Gusto has been told by France manager Didier Deschamps that he can improve defensively and in other areas of his game.

Deschamps was speaking ahead of France’s Euro 2024 qualifier against the Netherlands on Friday and his press conference was covered by Get French Football News.

Malo Gusto was drafted into the 2018 World Cup winners’ squad after Bayern Munich’s Dayot Upamecano had to withdraw because of injury.

The 20-year-old will not be joined by his Chelsea team-mate Axel Disasi, though, who has also had to return to his club due to an injury problem.

Didier Deschamps sets Malo Gusto challenge

While Deschamps can see a lot of potential in Gusto, he thinks the right-back still has things to work on.

Speaking at his recent press conference, he said: “He has areas of his game to work on, and he knows that he can improve defensively. But he is a young player who already finds himself at Chelsea, and he has potential which promises further progression in the months to come.”

A good year for Malo Gusto

Gusto may need to improve as a footballer, but he will certainly be happy with where he is at in his career right now.

Despite being only 20 years of age, he got a big £30.7m move from Lyon to Chelsea in January and could now be set to win his first cap for the France national team.

Simply put, Gusto is on the right path. The right-back has already made five starts in the Premier League this season and it probably would have been more if he did not get sent off against Aston Villa and pick up a suspension.

That ban is now over, though, and it will be interesting to see if he gets the nod over Reece James and Marc Cucurella when Chelsea take Arsenal on after the international break.

According to the Evening Standard, Chelsea’s captain is set to return from injury for the London derby at Stamford Bridge.
