Paul Merson has said he thinks Chelsea star Mason Mount “looks tired” based off his individual start to the season.
Mount, 22, is still easing his way into this new campaign as he looks to get up to top gear. He’s got zero goals and one assist in seven appearances so far this season.
Unfortunately, the England international has a “minor injury” that means he’s unavailable for tomorrow’s huge Premier League clash at home to Manchester City.
Nevertheless, pundit Merson has given a critical verdict on the Blues attacking midfielder.
He’s suggesting that the 22-year-old is off the pace a little right now.
“I’m Mason Mount’s biggest fan. I think he’s outstanding, one of the best players in England,” Merson wrote for the Daily Star.
“But he looks tired at the moment. Last Sunday against Tottenham they broke forward and his pass to Romelu Lukaku was a tired pass.
“His passing is usually always crisp. He always makes the right decision. I just thought he looked tired.”
Mason Mount just needs to recharge his batteries
This weekend’s fixture with Man City is gigantic, which is why it’s going to be so difficult for a competitor like Mount to watch from the stands with a small injury problem.
However, it might not be the worst thing in the long run for him to take a small break.
The attacking playmaker hasn’t looked at his sharpest since Euro 2020 finished in the summer and it’s worth noting he’s been playing flat out for the best part of a couple of years.
Mount’s been the ever-present for the Blues in the last two seasons, so a small dip is natural.
His challenge when he returns is to increase his goal output because he’s under more pressure now to contribute due to the competition in the squad.
It will only be a matter of time until he’s back to his very best, though.
