Defender Wesley Fofana has shared that Frank Lampard instructed his Chelsea players to play for the badge against Real Madrid last night.

He claimed in his interview with the club that the squad have struggled with the manager change ahead of what was the biggest game of the season for them.

The Blues fell to a 2-0 defeat against Real Madrid last night, however circumstances that played out will leave them relatively pleased with getting out with that score.

Ben Chilwell’s second half red card reduced them to 10 men, after an error from Marc Cucurella left him little choice when the hosts were in on goal.

Karim Benzema’s first half goal was followed by a long-range Marco Asensio strike, with Kepa Arrizabalaga’s role in both questioned.

Nevertheless, Chelsea are certainly not out of the tie, and know that a second leg performance similar to the one they pulled out against Borussia Dortmund could help them pull off the impossible.

Fofana also holds that opinion, taking the few positives from their night in Madrid after sharing what Lampard told them before the game.

He said: “He said play for the club, the badge and for Chelsea. We will prepare for the next game. We lost tonight but when you see the game it is ok, as 2-0 isn’t the worst. There are positives to take.

“It is hard for everybody as one coach comes in, he leaves and then another coach arrives. Every player is focused on winning games. we are Chelsea, a big club.”

A tough Premier League game against Brighton awaits a Blues side that would do well to rotate their squad before the defending champions come to town next week in a make or break game for Chelsea and their season.
