Former Premier League midfielder Danny Murphy has suggested that Brentford striker Ivan Toney would be an ideal fit for Chelsea.

The Blues have been heavily linked with Ivan Toney and Danny Murphy has said that the 27-year-old reminds him of Didier Drogba and Diego Costa when speaking recently on Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel FIVE.

According to the Evening Standard, Chelsea are weighing up a January move for Toney, who could cost them £80m.

Mauricio Pochettino does not have a prolific No.9 like Drogba or Costa right now, which is really hurting his side.

They have struggled to score goals this season, finding the back of the net just five times in six Premier League games.

Danny Murphy compares Ivan Toney to Didier Drogba and Diego Costa

Murphy cannot help but think about Drogba and Costa when looking at Toney and thinks he could be perfect for the club the two once played for.

“I think he screams Chelsea, Ivan Toney,” the former Liverpool star said when discussing the England international.

“A friend of mine is a Tottenham fan and he said they’d love him and I get that, Tottenham seems like a good fit as well, but when I think of Chelsea and their best times with Drogba and Costa, he reminds me a bit… strong, he’d have it with anyone, he has nice feet, scared of no one. He reminds me a bit of them”

High praise for Ivan Toney

Drogba and Costa were exceptional during their time in the Premier League, so Toney can be pleased that he is being compared to them.

Since Chelsea sold the latter, they have not really had a reliable centre-forward, but perhaps Toney may be able to fix that.

He is someone his whole team were able to rely on last season, with the Brentford man scoring 20 goals in the Premier League to fire his side to a top-half finish.

All in all, we also think that Toney could be a great addition to Chelsea as they look to improve up front.
