‘He’s stepped up’: Thomas Tuchel thinks 25-year-old Chelsea player looks so much more confident now

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel thinks that Andreas Christensen is now looking far more confident on the pitch after improving his game.

Christensen, who’s been on Chelsea’s books since 2012, has developed into an important player during Tuchel’s reign in charge.

The 25-year-old defender is starting to get the kind of merit his consistent performances deserve. Malmo boss Jon Dahl Tomasso raved about him recently before a Champions League fixture.

He’s a ball-playing centre-back that looks a rock at the back for Chelsea. Likewise, he’s a really important player on the international stage when he’s representing his country Denmark.

Tuchel has offered a glowing verdict on Christensen. In particular, he’s a big fan of the way he can play he can slot in anywhere across the back-three.

“We are very happy, and you can see that with the minutes, the games he gets and he deserves it because he plays very well,” Tuchel said on the 5th Stand App. 

“He is at an age where the development is not finished, he can still reach higher levels. He is a super important player for us because he can play in all there positions in the back-three.

“He is a very technical defender and has a very calm personality. I have a feeling he has stepped up and gained confidence. He plays a tough game now and he can play very physical, he is not why of tackling and pushing himself to a physical limit, that’s what need needs and that’s what you need as a Chelsea defender.”

Christensen is someone who’s still going under the radar.

You only have to look at his role in 2021 to see that he’s delivered outstanding individual performances week after week.

It’s a real credit that he’s holding his own when competing for places alongside quality teammates Thiago Silva, Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger. In addition, youngster Trevoh Chalobah is a young talent vying for the defensive positions this season, too.

How good is Blues defence?

With colossus goalkeeper Edouard Mendy in net, Chelsea must feel comfortable in keeping a clean sheet in any game they play.

Mendy’s fantastic whenever called into action, but so much credit has to go to the defensive shape in front of him.

Tuchel has put together a system that allows all his centre-backs to thrive.
