Thomas Tuchel explained that Jorginho has been kicking himself following his penalty mishap for Chelsea against West Ham United on Sunday.
As quoted by the 5th Stand, Tuchel said the Italian felt really down after the London derby despite being on the winning side at Stamford Bridge.
Jorginho’s prolonged pain is understandable.
He had the chance to be Chelsea’s saviour with four minutes of normal time remaining, following Craig Dawson’s foul on Romelu Lukaku inside the box.
Dawson’s eventual dismissal delayed the taking of the penalty, perhaps playing on the mind of the taker.
It just won’t happen for Jorginho
Whatever was going through Jorginho’s head, it certainly wasn’t to roll the ball into the arms of Lukasz Fabianski.
Unfortunately for the midfielder, that is exactly what he did.
Even his trademark hop, skip and jump didn’t throw off the West Ham goalkeeper, who gratefully welcomed the soft strike.
“If you get a late penalty and Jorgi with a perfect record for us, we all believed we had the goal that we needed,” admitted Tuchel.
“He has a certain style of shooting – when he scores what he did on 100 per cent level, it looks unbelievably cool, calm and composed.
“When he misses a penalty, it looks like could he have done better but it’s his style and he’s right to stick to it.
“He’s very upset with himself and very happy that Puli turned things around.”
Spot-kick dispair
Rather wretchedly, this is not the first time Jorginho has squandered a big opportunity from 12-yards.
He failed to convert against Switzerland twice in World Cup qualifying that could’ve won both matches for Italy, failures that eventually proved to be extremely costly.
Having lost out on six points, Robert Mancini’s men were forced to play North Macedonia in a playoff semi-final.
North Macedonia grabbed a 92nd-minute winner and thus denied the reigning European Champions a shot at World Cup glory.
Thankfully, on the most recent occasion, Jorginho’s club co-workers were able to drag him out of the mud.
Christian Pulisic converted Marcos Alonso’s cross with what was one of the final kicks of the contest.
Chelsea just edged out 1-0 victors, yet Jorginho will probably still feel like he lost out that day.
