How Chelsea fans have reacted to Cole Palmer coming 25th in the Ballon d’Or

Chelsea star Cole Palmer was excellent last season and has made a great start to this one.

In the 2023/24 campaign, Cole Palmer scored 27 goals and provided 15 assists in all competitions.

The Chelsea man also scored for England in the Euro 2024 final. That and the above saw Palmer nominated for the prestigious Ballon d’Or award, with the attacking midfielder finishing 25th in the rankings.

It is not bad for someone who has just become a first-team regular, yet Chelsea fans were not happy.

Chelsea fans hit out at Ballon d’Or ceremony

Palmer’s former Manchester City teammate Rodri won the Ballon d’Or. With Chelsea failing to win a trophy last season, Blues supporters would not have been expecting Palmer to beat Rodri to the award.

However, seeing him finish as low as 25th after his exploits has left them far from happy.

@RonnieCFC_ said: “Lol this award is disgraceful.”

@Madueke_Analyse posted: “Palmer 25th for the Ballon d’Or is crazy. He should be in the 6th–11th region.”

And finally, @Tyrese1920 said: “25th is disgusting. Cole Palmer will win it next year, we’ll be there.”

While he could only finish in the top 25 this time, Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola has backed Palmer to be in contention for the Ballon d’Or one day

Can Cole Palmer win the Ballon d’Or in the future?

Chelsea certainly believe he can. Co-sporting director Paul Winstanley recently told The Telegraph that there is “no doubt” that Palmer can claim the honour.

If Palmer continues to put up the numbers that he has been posting, then the 22-year-old will certainly be in contention.

But whether he wins it or not could come down to Chelsea as a whole. If the Blues cannot win the Premier League title or Champions League, then Palmer is never going to be one of the favourites.

And right now, Chelsea are not close to winning either. They are not even in the Champions League presently.

Ultimately, it is too hard to tell at present if Palmer has a Ballon d’Or in him. The fact that it is a topic of conversation, though, shows just how good he has been at Stamford Bridge.
