Chelsea captain Reece James started in England’s final game before their World Cup opener against Croatia next week.
James helped the Three Lions to beat Costa Rica 3-0 and got a nice rest after being substituted in the second half. He will now be expected to keep his place in the team.
The English media were impressed with James’ previous performance against New Zealand, but how did he fare this time around?
Anthony Gordon starred for England against Costa Rica but is no longer an option for Chelsea. Which left winger should we now sign? 🤔
Reece James quiet against Costa Rica
James had a quiet game against Costa Rica by his standards, with the Chelsea academy product not having to do too much defending as England dominated the friendly.
As per Sofascore, he only registered two defensive contributions. Going forward, most of England’s attacks came down the left, so James did not get many opportunities to showcase his attacking ability.
He did not complete a single key pass or cross. One quiet match does not take anything away from James, though.
The Chelsea skipper is still one of the best full-backs in the world and has also proven to be a very capable midfielder.

Gary Neville recently commented on James’ running power, believing it is not something that Trent Alexander-Arnold possesses. It is another thing that makes him such an elite right-back.
If England are to have a successful tournament, they need James to perform. He is going to be important in that right-back position defensively and in attack.
After missing the last World Cup because of injury, the 26-year-old will be desperate to play at this summer’s tournament and make an impact. He certainly has the ability to, even if he did have a quiet game against Costa Rica.
After Croatia, England play Ghana and you would also expect James to start that match. James is someone whom Tuchel really trusts after their time together at Chelsea and is a full-back who has proven that he can deliver on the biggest stage.
