Roberto De Zerbi could become Chelsea’s next manager.

The Italian is without a job right now after leaving Brighton & Hove Albion at the end of the season. Like Mauricio Pochettino, he left his club by mutual consent.

It has been claimed that Roberto De Zerbi is now the favourite for the Chelsea vacancy.

Ipswich Town’s Kieran McKenna had also been in the running, but it is now being reported that he is no longer under consideration.

It is good news for the likes of De Zerbi and Leicester City’s Enzo Maresca, who has also been linked to Stamford Bridge.

Does Roberto De Zerbi want to take over at Chelsea?

Chelsea have been on the decline since their takeover a couple of years ago.

They have now missed out on Champions League football two seasons in a row and will not even be in the Europa League next term after Manchester United’s FA Cup final triumph over Manchester City.

Nevertheless, it looks like the Chelsea job still appeals to De Zerbi.

According to the Evening Standard, the 44-year-old is keen on succeeding Pochettino and is hoping to prove that he is the right fit for the Blues.

Will Roberto De Zerbi get the Chelsea job?

De Zerbi is the candidate who probably ticks the most boxes for Chelsea.

For example, the former Brighton boss has Premier League experience, while his sides play like a big team.

This season, the Seagulls’ average ball possession was 60.2%. It was higher than Chelsea’s and actually the fourth highest in the English top flight, according to WhoScored.

Really, then, De Zerbi should be the leading contender for the Chelsea job and it would now not be a surprise if he ends up getting it.

Next term could be exciting for Chelsea supporters, but they are going to want trophies to go with that excitement, or at least a return to the Champions League.
