Ahead of the start of the 2026 World Cup, Jorrel Hato found himself with an opportunity for the Netherlands against Algeria in a warm-up match.

The Netherlands suffered a disappointing setback in their latest international fixture, falling to a frustrating defeat against a resilient Algeria side.

Jorrel Hato was introduced at the half-time interval, gaining a crucial 45 minutes of international experience as part of a reshaped backline.

Hato looked composed under heavy aerial pressure and progressive in his passing, asserting his defensive dominance despite the overall collective failure of the team. But the Chelsea defender was the player at fault for the Algeria goal, allowing the winger to come inside and find the back of the net.

Jorrel Hato’s display rated by the Dutch media

Dutch media outlet Voetbal Primeur gave their ratings on the Netherlands side that lost to Algeria, which saw a completely new 11 feature at some point in the second half.

β€˜Jorrel Hato – 5.5: Hato came on immediately after halftime, but unlike Van de Ven, he didn’t really get the chance to distinguish himself. The Chelsea player was by no means the boss of Hadj Moussa.’

Featuring at left-back, Hato had 31 touches, made 16 out of 20 passes, five passes into the final third, two tackles, one interception, two recoveries, three clearances, two duels won and one lost (FotMob).

Hato is likely to play as a wing-back for Chelsea

Jorrel Hato’s versatility makes him an ideal fit for Xabi Alonso’s preferred five-back system at Chelsea.

Widely touted as a potential replacement for Marc Cucurella, the teenager has the pace to be a nuisance at both ends of the pitch.

His experience at both centre-back and left-back will be invaluable under Alonso, with the ability to provide cover when needed, as well as fitting into a potential four-back system.
