Gary Lineker once again jumped to the defence of Chelsea marvel of Mason Mount after he come under scrutiny for being selected by England again last night.
Mount started his third consecutive World Cup qualifying group game in the Three Lions 2-1 over Poland yesterday.
When Gareth Southgate’s XI was announced pre-match, there was a section of fans bemoaning the decision to include Chelsea’s talented midfielder once more.
Lineker leaped onto Twitter to profusely defend Mount and question those who doubted him.
The 22-year-old has been brilliant for club and country ever since he made his Blues debut at the beginning of last season.
He has swiftly become a favourite of Frank Lampard, Gareth Southgate and now Thomas Tuchel.
His ability to play in a variety of positions without much variation in his quality makes him a manager’s dream.
However, there are still portions of supporters who believe there are better options for England than Mount.
Names like Jack Grealish, Phil Foden and James Maddison have all been contrasted against the Blues star.
Those within the Three Lions circle dispute this comparison.
Southgate proved in the last three international fixtures that Foden and Mount can feature together effectively.
Meanwhile, Grealish told Sky Sports that: “I think he’s (Mount) a terrific player, and I don’t think we’re even fighting for the same spot, to be honest.”
The Chelsea Chronicle View
I thought I had to give my opinion because it’s painful to hear or see people lament Mason.
Just because he doesn’t glide past challenges like Foden, or dribble and draw fouls like Grealish, there is a stigma that he isn’t an exciting player.
But that’s the beauty of Mount. He does all the simple things expertly, like his weight of pass or picking up space in between the lines.
Why can’t we just enjoy all this golden generation rather than trying to tarnish them individually?
