TalkSPORT pundit Jason Cundy has claimed that he didn’t understand what Chelsea were trying to do in the midfield last night.

The Blues were on top for the majority of Graham Potter’s first game in charge of the club, however a momentary lapse in concentration again cost them what would be a precious three points in the Champions League.

There was a number of interesting points to note from the new manager’s first team selection, none more so than the gamble to play Raheem Sterling as an advanced wing-back, a gamble which certainly paid off.

The other intriguing decision made by Potter was in midfield, with Jorginho, Mateo Kovacic and Mason Mount seemingly forming a midfield three, with the Italy international at the base of the trio.

Cundy confused by midfield

The other two performed shuttling roles, with Mount in particular showing signs of his better stuff again in deeper areas.

However, Cundy struggled to understand exactly the system that Potter utilised in midfield.

He said: “I couldn’t quite work out exactly what Chelsea were doing, certainly in the middle third. That was an area where I didn’t fully grasp what we were. A little underwhelmed with what I saw tonight, unconvincing.

“Big game for him [Potter], he said in the week that it was the first game he’s ever been to in the Champions League let alone managing it. I think we shaded it, but we didn’t do enough convincingly to win it. You always need the second goal.”

The return of N’golo Kante for one of those shuttling roles will no doubt further strengthen the midfield, while the position will no doubt suit Conor Gallagher’s strengths better than what he was able to show in the position he was used in by previous manager Thomas Tuchel.
